Sporting KC punched their ticket to the 2022 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup semifinals after their 6-0 win over the Union Omaha. It was a successful night for Sporting players as Daniel Salloi and Felipe Hernandez both got a brace. Khiry Shelton and Kortne Ford each scored once.

Sporting is now unbeaten in U.S Open Cup play in their past 12 home matches. This is the sixth time Kansas City has made it to the Open Cup semi’s.

With over 800 traveling fans that made the 155-mile trip, Sporting made sure to get things done and not let their third-division opponent get the upset they wanted. Union Omaha were able to beat Minnesota United FC as well as Chicago Fire FC before having their Cinderella story come to a stop against Sporting KC.

Peter Vermes tactics paid off as he made four defensive changes going into the match, which paid off as Kansas City were able to keep Omaha from finding the behind of the net. Thanks to his tactics Vermes now holds a record of 23-7-3 in U.S. Open Cup play.
